Horse Racing Betting Tips – How to Win More

Posted on 26th January 2022

Horse racing is one of the most popular sports in the world for betting. The biggest races that take place annually attract punters that typically wouldn’t bet at any other point during the year.

Races such as the Cheltenham Gold Cup, the Epsom Derby and Grand National are always among the biggest betting days of the year, with novices and experienced gamblers all looking to find the winner in competitive fields. But, what tips should newcomers to betting follow in order to enhance their chances of finding a winning selection?

Read The Form

The most important reading before placing any bet on the racing is the form. The form dictates the horses that have the best chance of winning the race. Horses that have form over both course and distance tick two main boxes, and will be highly likely to repeat their feat.

Form over distance is among the most important piece of reading, as a selection that has wins next to his or her name over the same distance that the race is being run over will have a better chance than a selection either taking a step up or down in trip.

Trainer/Jockey Form

It isn’t the just the form of the horse that should be studied. Trainer and jockey strikerates are essential reading before making a wager. Stables in strong form with winning strikerates highlights that the yard is at the top of their game, and will likely have a better change of landing the win.

The form of the jockey is also important, as those used to entering the winners’ enclosure will be in good confidence and will be riding at the top of their game. On the flip side, trainers without a win over the past 14 days indicates that horses within the yard may not be at their peak level of performance.

Understand Betting Markets

One of the most common mistakes that newcomers to betting on racing make is betting on just one market. The win market is certainly the easiest to understand, as returns will be achieved simply by selecting the horse that wins the race.

However, value could also be achieved by looking at the each-way and place markets, especially in a race such as the Grand National that has a big field of entries. With bigger-field races, some of the leading sportsbooks also offer increased place positions, which means that a value selection can be made on a horse at a bigger price.

Use Welcome Bonuses

There is an excellent selection of welcome offers available online these days, such as the William Hill new free bet offers. Welcome bonuses are important for all new customers, as they ensure that punters are rewarded for signing up for an account, and often mean that players have an increased wallet to play with after opting-in and claiming the bonus.

All sportsbooks online will offer a welcome bonus in some form, which often means shopping around to find the best one that is tailored to your needs.
