Throughout 2023, few stars have shone as brightly in horse racing as Equinox, the Japanese-trained sensation. This exceptional runner elevated his status to new heights in late November, delivering a spectacular performance under the skilled guidance of jockey Christophe Lemaire to clinch victory in the Japan Cup. As one of the premier events in the Japanese racing calendar, the Japan Cup has historically been a platform where the most celebrated Japanese horses demonstrate their prowess. Equinox’s triumph in 2023 was no exception, as he impressively outclassed a field of formidable contenders, solidifying his remarkable season.

That purse makes it the richest race on the international calendar, and the action takes place at the iconic Tokyo Racecourse.
A total distance of 2,400 meters is covered by the field, with a maximum of 18 runners able to participate. As an invitational event, fields are typically made up of runners from around the world, with British, Irish, and American horses typically joining Japanese-trained runners in the race.
The Japan Cup is one of the newest races on the calendar when compared to prestigious races such as the Prix de ‘Arc de Triomphe and the Epsom Derby. The race’s first running was staged in 1981, with the field limited to only horses trained in Japan, Australia, Canada, and the United States. America landed the first win in the race, with Mairzy Doates claiming success for Cash Asmussen.
To improve the standard of the race, there were no limitations to international challengers from the 1982 edition. American success in the race continued in 1982 when Half Iced won in a close finish. Stanerra was one of the most famous early winners of the race, as she added the Japan Cup to her famous wins in the 1983 season after previously landing success in the Hardwicke Stakes and Prince of Wales Stakes.
Japan’s first dominant era of success in the race came in 1998, with El Condor Pasa landing victory, before fellow home-trained runners landed success in 1999 and 2000. Deep Impact would cement his legacy as one of the best horses in the world with victory in 2006 before Shonan Pandora landed success in 2015. The 2020 edition of the race remains one of the most famous as there was a clash of champions, with three Japanese Triple Crown winners going head to head. Almond Eye would land success over Contrail and Daring Tact to land her second win in the race to close the curtain on her career.
In truth, Equinox’s legacy was already secured before the running of the 2023 Japan Cup, as the Tetsuya Kimura-trained runner was already the highest-rated horse in training. However, the four-year-old continued his lofty reputation at the highest level by breezing clear of the Japan Cup field on November 26 to beat Liberty Island by four lengths. That was his sixth straight win in the stakes level and was his seventh success in nine starts in stakes races.
Lemaire was again still on the runner, just as he was in the G1 Dubai Sheema Classic in late March, as Equinox finished over three lengths clear of talented Grade 1 performer Westover. The four-year-old had beaten all major rivals following his success in the Japan Cup, meaning there was no surprise when it was revealed after that race that he would be retired to stud.
The Japan Cup has the power to further the reputations of horses to new heights, and that was the case once again in 2023 following Equinox’s stunning performance. While there will likely be few racing fans disappointed that the decision was made to send the four-year-old to stud, it is a decision that could be lucrative for connections over the coming seasons. But there will now be space for a new superstar to come out of the pack and dominate some of the biggest turf races on the international schedule in 2024.
